These lesson plans were developed through Coastal Carolina University's M.A.T. program. They are South Carolina standards-based plans and include task summary, objectives, materials list, procedure list, and more. Most of the plans specify a grade level, but with some modifications they may be appropriate for other grade levels as well. We will be adding to this page, so check back often!
Exploring Symbolism With Indian Rangoli:
Grade 8: With this lesson students will learn about symbolism and how it is used in the Indian art of Rangoli. The presentation contains an explanation of symbolism, a brief introduction to Rangoli, and examples of symbolism in Indian art and culture. The students will work in groups to create their own Rangoli design, and then will have a "competition". The groups will create their Rangoli outside the classroom with sidewalk chalk.The above title is a link to the lesson plan and pressentation.Grade 8: This lesson will take approximately three 90 minute class periods. Students will learn about the principle of pattern and how it is used in the Indian art of henna. The presentation contains an explanation of pattern in art and a brief history of mehndi henna. The students will then create their own henna designs on plaster casts of their hands. The title is a link to a lesson plan outline and presentation.
With this lesson students will learn about the Indian tribal art of Gond Painting. First, they will have an explanation of the principle of movement in art, and then a brief introduction to the history of the Gond people and their culture. After the introduction students will create their own painting in the Gond style, and learn to incorporate movement in their painting. Grade 8: Driftwood travels in water from one location to another until it finally comes to a resting place. Driftwood has a timeless appeal and many beachgoers see driftwood as beautiful pieces of art. The students will choose a piece of driftwood and then paint the wood to show what subject they see in the wood.
Nolan Collages- Asymetrical and Symmetrical Balance:
Grade 8: Students will create a piece of art that
shows the interaction between dark and light,
positive and negative shapes, and asymetrical and
symmetrical balance. Notan is Japanese for the
interaction between light and dark.
Tie-dye and Batik:
Grades 6-8: The student will create his/her own
tie-dyed fabrics with batik embellishments. Students will learn about the history of tie-dyeing in the US and India.
Warhol Color Scheme:
Grade 8: Color schemes can help define an artwork. Students will explore the formal element of color. They will then create an artwork similar to Andy Warhol’s silkscreens that use 6 different color schemes.
Winter Watercolor Landscape:
Grade Level 1-8: Students will learn about the wet-on-wet watercolor wash technique and how to create texture using a sponge and acrylic paint. They will also learn about landscape composition, atmospheric perspective, watercolor painting skills, and will paint their own simple compositions using different colors, shapes, and overlapping skills.
